To naturally wash the cotton cloth before dyeing, it is washed in cow dung. The cow dung is a natural caustic agent that removes the natural fine coating of wax in the cotton and thus allows the dye to bind with the cloth. It also leaves the cloth and your hands very soft afterwards.
