Wonderground Day 2 afternoon

Jetlag caught up and I began to zone out significantly in the afternoon. Heard great talk by Nikola Morelli on Service Design. I will try to post from cell phone later. Here is his picture.

Nice evening discussion about different design journals and meeting more people to participate in the design and governmentality publications and conference.

I present today, so I might zone out in the afternoon again, but I will try to be diligent.

The conference has been excellent community wise. The papers are interesting but I find a lack of awareness of what other fields have done, which has been a point of discussion. I don't understand why designers feel like they should reinvent the wheel when they can take someone else's wheel and convert it to a spaceship. But I don't believe that originality is possible without knowing everything else that has been done, so maybe I just don't get it.

Lucy Niemayer Product evaluation Did a survey of men. New focus on meaning in design (looking at emotional issues).
Postmodern society: design is linked to attidueds, values, and experience.
Attitudinal design Mental style and lifestyle, context of use.

Classes of shavers (four) based on number of blades. Men 20 to 30 years and different classes. Probing tools Questionnaire, collages (images and words), product evaluations, product personality.

Results Group 1more traditional, conservative, and use disposible shavers, colllages dealt with family, prefer rigid head and reject organic shapes, represent stable family life.

Group 2 more open, more choice, and use disposible blades, collages dealt with social lifestyle with men, prefer pivoting heads, represent high class person want to be in the future.

?? How does this differ from market research techniques?

Tiiu Color and light in interior environments Color and light theories are taught s separate. This is based on Cartesian bias. Not valuable if going to be relevant in the future. Lighting has changed (LEDs. Fiber optics.) due to technologies. Need to support human needs
Changing how people react to environments. Frustrated with teachng color as pure aesthetics. Because more dynamic and messy.

Her course: Color and light theory, application, interior spaces, and case studies. Explore objective and subjective components of light and color. Use university spaces as laboratory.

Integrat theory and practice. Dynamic processes s explored Students experiment

Design and emotion

Design has always been about eliciting emotion. Even during high modernism. Designs were sensuous. Choice of products have alwyas been emotionally based.

There is market driven understanding of emotion. She looks at history of emotion and design. Carthatic experience of religious artifacts.
Postmodern explore negative emotions like aversion to provoke critical thinking. Exploitation of national feeling like Greek watch.

Tool supports sketching and 3d models Repeat of drawing make decisions Digital tool sketcher does the same

Function for extracting sketch line
Interviewed car designers to find out what lines are extracted. Smoothness and sense movement. Adopted the pressure and velocity of pen to extract the best line.

Modification of sketch lines

Function for construction of 3d model. Car design using 7 silohuette views. Put into 2q lines of perspective project . Tool creats other views. Can translate to parallel view and can correct it.

Good line extraction maximum pressure minimal changes in pressure and velocity use positional averages to modify line

2D sketch inputted in perspective view and then other views decided by system. Commentary Did not think about user. Not thought of used outside of car design.

P2: John Fraser collaborative tools for designers. 2001 _ 2004 link to design around the world. International team. Used blackboard tool. 4 weeks graphic design team projects.

Research is concerned with:
Use of public and private space. Synchronous and asychronous.

30 groups of 3 or 4 students Public space of introducts Balance private space with mentoring. Students wanted to protect problem solving and ideation Public forum for critique. Looked at success of work and communication. Conclude: scaffolding had propositional statements on work and critique of process. Number of messages Had to participate in critiques

Comments Files were exchanged by students. A lot were annoted. In some cases had leader and not others.
Strong mentorship broke sense of safety.

P3: Asim Yantar Sound design Ed for interactive media Taught for 7 years. Students not as creative with sound for interactive media design.
What is creativity: Often use speech sound but distracting when looped.
Sound design 3rd semester of 8. Give ability to design sound. Tried 4 versions of course. This is the fifth. Tie conceptual,space, to sound. Students still take video with just motion. Students select sound to covey emotion. Image conveyed through sound. Had to use non musical sound.

Sound physic Sound design skill. Realistic, non realistic, composition, and editing. Sound image relation Sound motion relation

Results of study 1 when sound is used most important data is motion 2 need to use non realistic or natural sound 3 sound.should make it easier for user to navigate 4 designer needs to be able to design sound or direct others 5 60% of students are able to do 4.

Forced simplicity Material and technological lack in early ancestry and in developing nations. Today we have an abundance of choice. More choices make us less happy.

A modern choice Life is quatitatively easier, but more complex. Complexity expands to keep us busy.

Fernando. Congress head spoke of: Science is magic. Design is seduction. 1849 room was built to seduce. Center is where everything converges. Good that it is a small center. Wish us success in clarifying reality. Happy celtic new year.

He spoke of the changes that David During made that allowed DRS to move forward as more international and adventursome. Only society open to all disciplines of design and academic and professionals from all countries. He asked what purpose does the DRS can serve. Need to construct value of design research. Need to help/support design interactions with other disciplines.
The head of the firt meeting, Steven Scharwtz wished them good science. Ken Friedman wrote a paper about how design as science,(i.e. systematic approach to design). Steven Scharwtz said that design is the science of uncertainty. Wishes us,"Good science and great uncertainty".

Blogging from Wonderground 2006 in Lisbon

Wonderground I arrived at the Wonderground Conference today (GMT) in the city of Lisbon. It is foggy, and hilly like SF as my colleague Daniel said. Some of it reminds me of Bilbao and some of Paris. I like the mixture of traditional Palaces and modern office buildings. The residential flats are like the ones in Bilbao, very tall.

I don't think the conference venue will have wifi, but I wil hope to blog through my cell phone. It is going to be interesting to see if this is my true "tribe" of people on the edge of design and research. It is very international.

I attended the reception tonight. Not much fun because I knew absolutely nobody and it felt like too much effort to introduce myself. It wil be better with name tags and conference topics to discuss.

I am super sleepy, not having had any real sleep for now 24 hours +.
