CAFA research methods for design lesson 1
Walking in Beijing and the park

CAFA lecture and tutorial 1

The first lesson went okay I think. It is hard to tell. The white boarding seems to be a good idea in terms of keeping everyone engaged. It helped to write out concepts in Chinese although I was made to realise that I am using traditional when they use simplified, so I will switch.

The class is made up of mostly women and one man. I asked about it during lunch given almost all the professors are men. They said that the men prefer to work instead of study. This will have huge implications for design education in the future.

We focused on forming the appropriate question during the tutorial using the three kinds of design research and the five types of anthropological studies. It worked in that the final questions of the students who went last were sharper than the first ones, which meant they understood the concepts.

The students are a bit shy, but began to open up as the time went by. They are mostly design history students. I think we will have fun.

Now I am exhausted. Tomorrow I will work on my marking for Swin and planning for the CBI symposium. Good night.
